Introduction
Empowerment takes many forms, but in Andhra Pradesh, it’s literally on the move. A pioneering collaboration between the Mission for Elimination of Poverty in Municipal Areas (MEPMA) and bike aggregator Rapido is transforming the lives of women by turning mobility into financial independence and confidence. Launched on International Women’s Day, the initiative has already impacted over 1,000 women across nine urban centers, including Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam, and Nellore. Through electric two- and three-wheelers, flexible loans, and practical support, women are not just earning income; they are reclaiming autonomy, dignity, and hope. For many, this program represents a significant step toward financial independence, allowing them to contribute to their families while making decisions for themselves.
How the Initiative Works
Under Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu’s “One Family, One Entrepreneur” vision, MEPMA facilitated electric vehicles for self-help group (SHG) women and their families. Loans were issued in the women’s names, allowing licensed family members to operate the vehicles. Rapido removed onboarding fees and offered EMI assistance for the first year, removing financial barriers. Out of 1,003 women and families who benefited from the program, 688 have already registered on Rapido, collectively completing over 45,000 rides and earning Rs 35 lakh.
Real Lives, Real Impact
For Vadlapudi Glory Manju from Vijayawada, the scooter represents more than transportation; it is freedom and financial security. “I earn up to Rs 10,000 a month after finishing household chores. This scooter is my strength and my children’s future,” she said. Madhavi, also from Vijayawada, turned to the program after her husband suffered paralysis. “With a Rs 16,000 subsidy, I bought an Activa and started driving with Rapido. It gives me extra income and hope.” Similarly, Badisa Bhavani, whose husband is bedridden, now earns Rs 500–700 daily and continues the work “with pride.” For all these women, earning their own income means independence, decision-making power, and a sense of self-worth.
Financial Security and Future Growth
The initiative helps women save Rs 13,000–16,000 per month while maintaining flexibility around household responsibilities. HRD & IT Minister Nara Lokesh emphasized that women empowerment has been a central focus for the state. Buoyed by its success, the Andhra Pradesh government plans to expand the program to reach 4,800 women by next year, creating a scalable model for women-led entrepreneurship that combines income generation, mobility, and dignity.
Conclusion
This initiative proves that empowerment is not just about policies on paper; it’s about practical opportunities, confidence, and independence. By giving women the tools to earn, save, and control their own time, Andhra Pradesh is showing that mobility can drive change, one ride at a time, while allowing women to achieve financial independence and a stronger role in their families and communities.
